On 22 February 2022, I was having tea with the brilliant dramaturg Anne Cattaneo at the Drama Book Shop in Midtown Manhattan. During our far-ranging conversation, Anne told me a story about a dinner party she and her husband once hosted to introduce Stephen Sondheim to a young writer-director named James Lapine. By the end of the evening, the idea for the musical Sunday in the Park with George had been born.
