Willy Loman is the type of role that actors dream of playing — the American Lear. Lee J. Cobb, who originated the part, was a man of substantial stature, heightening the sadness of Willy’s deterioration. Dustin Hoffman’s Willy was smaller and scrappier, giving the impression of a small man being crushed by a cruel system. Nathan Lane seems to be somewhere between these two poles — at least physically.
