In recent years there have been musical adaptations of Some Like It Hot; Beetlejuice; Rocky; Groundhog Day; Back to the Future; Mrs Doubtfire; Cry-Baby; Moulin Rouge!; and Hairspray, to name but a few — with variable levels of artistic and commercial success. This plethora of celluloid-to-stage adaptations begs the question: what type of film makes the leap to being a good stage play or musical? The musical version of Death Becomes Her is a vast improvement on its source material — a gloriously entertaining piece of theatre based on a mediocre film.
