The Kael Report in Conversation with … Alan Hollinghurst, 21 December 2025, London, NW3

February 2026

In person, Hollinghurst is excellent company — his luscious baritone by turns mischievous, warm, and disarmingly open. As a “serious writer”, the humour in his work is often overlooked, but this becomes impossible to ignore in conversation with him. This piece frequently erupts into laughter and, at times, embraces a shared silliness on both sides.

Our conversation unfolded over several hours, beginning with a walk across Hampstead Heath, which Hollinghurst loves deeply. A resident of North London since 1983, the Heath provided a fitting prelude to a discussion that continued in his home, over a meal cooked by The Kael Report.
